Electric skateboards are similar to normal skateboards except that they have an electric motor that drives them forward. You open the throttle, control the speed and brake with a hand-held remote control. The battery that fuels the electric motor is mounted under the deck. The motors are either attached under the deck or inside the wheels. Electric skateboards accelerate and brake independently.
A hub motor applies torque directly to the wheel itself with the motor being embedded in the wheel, rather than transferring it through gears, belts, or chains. The motor is surrounded by a ring of polyurethane. The thinner the polyurethane sleeve, the worse the shock absorption and driving. They tend to have less torque and braking power than a belt motor, but require less maintenance, are easier to kick push, and are less noisy.
A belt motor connects the wheels to the outer rotor motor via a belt and gear belt system. They are found on more performance boards as they are capable of higher speeds, create massive torque, and allow for more wheel selections. However, belt motors are noisier, harder to kick push, and require maintenance (belt replacement due to wear or tear, belt tensioning and belt alignment).
Some boards are IP55, IP67, or IP54 Waterproof rated. This means the boards are water-resistant NOT waterproof. A light rinsing or ride through a puddle will not cause damage. However, we do not recommend riding in any wet conditions as chances for injury and damage to internal components of motors increase. Also, too much water can rust bearings, eventually damaging them permanently.
Not all remotes are compatible with other boards. Be sure to consult the manual for information on pairing remotes with boards. If you still have questions contact us at email@example.com
If you use your electric skateboard daily the battery will last for about 2-3 years. Standard batteries such as Lithium-ion, Lithium Polymer, and Lithium Iron Phosphate differ in battery life. Always consult the manual for battery information.
Battery life depends on factors such as weight of rider, terrain, inclines and also the way the rider uses different speed modes. Most boards go the advertised range if on lower speed modes and flatter terrains. Higher speed modes and frequent hills take more battery usage.
We offer a variety of smaller, cheaper boards for our younger riders. Electric skateboards can be a great way for children to develop skills in skating such as balance and coordination. We always advise all riders and younger riders especially to wear protective gear at all times. Check out our staff picked favorite here.
Not at all. In a lot of ways an electric board is a lot easier than learning to ride a traditional skateboard because you can accelerate and brake with a controller rather than using your feet to control your speed. It always good to get used riding the board first without a controller to find your balance points and feel how the trucks ride.
Always consult the manual for proper charging times. Do not charge the board longer than recommended. If you ride the board frequently it is okay to store the electric board at full battery. For infrequent riders and long time storage, it is best to drain the battery to 80% because in this range the board retains its electric charge storage capability and capacity. Make sure that it is stored somewhere where it won't be tripped over, stepped on, or otherwise get in the way. Store it off the floor, in a rack designed specifically for skateboards. Never leave your skateboard in cold, wet weather for any length of time, even just overnight. Humid or wet storage areas can cause permanent damage. Again, always consult the manual for other proper techniques.
Trails, paved roads, and beaches are great places to ride depending on your board type. Remember, new laws for electric skateboards are developing rapidly all over the country in response to the popularity of personal mobility products. Be sure to review your local city and state laws concerning personal mobility.
Note: The absence of a law forbidding the riding of electric skateboards does not mean that it is legal to do so.
You should note that electric skateboards with a battery capacity of less than 160 Wh can be taken on a plane, but airlines enforce different policies and some of them will not allow you to fly with your board. It is prohibited to transport any batteries with capacities of more than 160 Wh on planes. It is likely a majority of boards are prohibited from flights. Always consult with the airline before flights.
